Remove hard water and mineral stains from concrete

White or chalky marks on concrete can come from irrigation minerals, deicer, efflorescence or another deposit. Correct identification matters: an acid treatment that affects one deposit can damage concrete or nearby finishes when used incorrectly.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Note whether the deposit appears where sprinklers hit, follows a crack, returns after rain or is concentrated near a garage. Photograph it dry and wet. Efflorescence can reappear while moisture continues moving through the slab.

01

Identify the mark first

Note whether the deposit appears where sprinklers hit, follows a crack, returns after rain or is concentrated near a garage. Photograph it dry and wet. Efflorescence can reappear while moisture continues moving through the slab.

02

Start with the least aggressive test

Dry-brush loose material with a nylon brush, then test water and a pH-neutral cleaner in an inconspicuous spot. Follow all label directions. Do not mix chemicals or apply acidic cleaners without confirming surface compatibility and runoff controls.

03

Prevent the source

Adjust sprinkler heads so they do not repeatedly wet concrete. Check drainage and downspouts for recurring moisture. If deposits return, investigate the water path rather than repeating stronger cleaning.

04

Local mineral buildup

Irrigation overspray and mineral-rich water can leave visible deposits in the Salt Lake Valley. A site inspection can distinguish removable surface residue from a moisture or concrete issue before treatment is selected.

Q&A

Common questions

Are hard-water deposits and efflorescence the same?

No. Both may look pale, but their sources differ. Efflorescence involves salts carried through masonry by moisture; irrigation deposits are left as water evaporates.

Should I use vinegar or muriatic acid?

Avoid improvised acid treatments. They may etch concrete, affect nearby metals or plants, and create hazardous runoff. Use only a labelled compatible product or consult a professional.
